This is the news that some members of the Columbus Hockey Association have been waiting on for over 7 years. There will be a full time ice rink in Columbus Georgia. I was able to get some of the details from the Columbus Civic Centers Operations Manager Brian Giffin. Brian reported that the rink will be a NHL regulation sized rink (200’ by 85’) with penalty boxes, players boxes and a scorer’s box. The rink will have a full concession stand, lobby area, lockers, work out area (This will be managed by the Columbus Cottonmouths) and 7 locker rooms, two of which will permanently be used by the Cottonmouths. All of the locker rooms will have showers and normal bathroom facilities. There will also be an additional Zamboni purchased for the new facility. It was reported that this facility will be used for Youth and Adult League Hockey, Hockey Clinics, Learn to Skate Programs, Figure Skating, Speed Skating programs. Birthday Parties and Public Skating will be offered on a regular basis to include weekend nights. The Civic Center is currently planning to kick off the grand opening of the facility with some special events :

• NHL Legends Game On March 25-26 with the Official Grand Opening (Tentatively), with a possible visit of the Lord Stanley’s Cup.
• SEC Club Hockey Tournaments
• They are currently bidding on a regional and possibly national SEC Club Hockey tournaments.

The Civic Center is currently working with Auburn University to have their Club Hockey team here. The University is working out their game schedule.
This new rink will provide more opportunities for our hockey programs to grow here in Columbus and for other sports such as speed skating and figure skating to grow as well. This will also provide a more stable schedule for our hockey programs. I am posting some pictures of the progress of the new rink below. We will be updating it’s progress throughout the year.

The Columbus Hockey Association has a chance to win a $2500 grant from Liberty Mutual. All that is required is to fill out a quiz on being a responsible parent of a player or being a responsible coach. This money would greatly help the CHA with such things as reducing costs to parents or purchasing new equipment. We encourage everyone to take just a few minutes and fill out the quiz and make sure to credit the Columbus Hockey Association.
