3/9/2018 - 8:50pm

On Thursday night, the U.S.eh team rebounded from their 3-1 loss to the C-Men and eliminated the Mighty Drunkards from the playoffs in dominating fashion, knocking off the Drunkards 9-4. Shots on goal were recorded as 70 for U.S.eh and 21 for the Mighty Drunkards.

Championship action kicks off Tuesday night (3/13) with the C-Men hosting U.S.eh.  If the C-Men win, they will be crowned the 2017-2018 champs.  If U.S.eh pulls out the victory, the series continues Thursday night (3/15) in a winner-take-all battle for the cup.

2017-2018 Playoffs - Rounds 1 and 2 Results and Round 3 Preview

3/7/2018 – 4:25pm

PLAYOFFS ROUND 1:  Mighty Drunkards vs. C-Men

In the opening round of the playoffs, the 2nd seed Mighty Drunkards hosted the 3rd seed C-Men.

The game proved to be an offensive onslaught with 72 combined shots on goal and 14 combined goals.  The C-Men won the day, defeating the Drunkards by a score of 8-6.

Forward Jeff Lesmeister led the offensive assault for the C-Men, scoring a hat trick in the first period of play.  However, the Drunkards were equal to the task in the period and netted 5 first period goals (with 3 in the opening two minutes of the contest).  The first period came to a close with the Mighty Drunkards up 5-4.

At that point, the narrative changed.  A solid second period of goaltending for both teams saw the frame close in a 5-5 tie.  Then, in the third the C-Men came on in full force.  Defenseman John Hubbard completed his hat trick and Mike Brooks scored as well.  Bob Cowles tried to rally his team with a goal of his own for the Drunkards, but it wasn’t enough and the final buzzer sounded with a 8-6 victory and the C-Men advancing on.

In addition to Hubbard’s and Lesmeister’s hat tricks and Mike “Chili” Brooks scoring goals, assists came from Don Terkalas (2 assists), John Hubbard (2 assists), Mike Brooks (1 assist), Dan Corso (1 assist) and Jeff Lesmeister (1 assist).

For the Mighty Drunkards, forward Bob Cowles led the way with 2 goals and 1 assist.  Also scoring goals (one each) were Justin Nabors, Mike Nash, and Steve Pastor.  And, Pat Holland, Trevor Wood, and Justin Nabors each tacked on apples on the night.

In net, the C-Men turned to goaltender Barbie Phillips (starting goalie Ian Vigier was a healthy scratch and previous goaltender Dan Leadon was signed by Ft. Bragg as a free agent).  Barbie played her best game of the season at the best possible time.  After a shaky start, she backstopped the team by only giving up one goal in the second and third periods combined.  She made 24 saves on 30 shots, including big late-game saves on breakaways and two-on-one opportunities for the Drunkards.  Afterwards, she was awarded the game puck by the club as she registered her first win in B league action with the victory.

For the Drunkards, goaltender Noullet turned aside 36 of the 42 pucks sent his way.  He made multiple acrobatic glove saves throughout the evening, but it wasn’t enough to stave off the attack.

Afterwards, we caught up with C-Men goalie Barbie Phillips to ask her about her first win in “The Show.”  Barbie had this to say, “Yeah, I am happy with the win.  But… seriously… don’t make a big deal about this in your li’l recaps.  I mean it.”

Again, Barbie Phillips was the hero of the day, and the team would’ve found their way into the loser bracket if not for her heroic and stalwart performance in net.

PLAYOFFS ROUND 2:  U.S.eh vs. C-Men

The C-Men advanced to the second round of the playoffs to face the top-seeded U.S.eh squad.  The team had to take on the U.S.eh skaters without top defensemen John Hubbard (scratched, non-injury related).  Additionally, C-Men starting goaltender Ian Vigier was a late scratch and the team had to turn to emergency goaltender Noullie the Goalie (no relation to Drunkard goaltender Josh Noullet despite the uncanny physical resemblance).

The game was a battle from start to finish.  Both clubs put together defensive minded game plans and both goaltenders played exceptional throughout the contest.  Both teams put a strong focus on back-checking and clogging up the slot area, and it paid dividends. Heading into the third period of play, the scoreboard was completely empty with a 0-0 tie.

In the third, the C-Men broke the tie as Jerome Bechard took the game on his shoulders and finally solved goaltender Barney Slayton just over a minute into the period.  For half the period, the score remained 1-0.  However, with 6:42 remaining in the third, U.S.eh defenseman Dave Letarte solved C-Men goaltender Noullie and spoiled the shut out, tying the game 1-1.  Jeff Lesmeister turned on his attack for the C-Men at this point, beating Barney and giving his team a 2-1 lead just 37 seconds later.  And, Jeff scored again with under a minute to play, finding the empty net.

The C-Men shocked the hockey world and won the game 3-1 and advancing to the championship round for the first time in franchise history.

Shots on goal in the game were deadlocked at 27 shots per team.  Goalie Barney Slayton made 24 saves for his club and netminder Noullie turned aside 26 of 27 for the C-Men.

U.S.eh crushes a depleted Mighty Drunkards team for 11th consecutive win

2/12/2018 - 2:59pm

The Mighty Drunkards skated with an extremely short bench during last Thursday night's game, and the 1st place U.S.eh squad took full advantage, devastating the Drunkards 16-1 and outshooting them 52-15.  If the Mighty Drunkards would've scored on every shot on goal, they'd have still lost the game 16-15.

The game started about as bad as a game could for the short-benched Mighty Drunkards.  The first shot of the game was a low wrister from the point that was expertly deflected under the crossbar by Dave Letarte just 24 seconds into the game.   A mere 20 seconds later, Corey Fossa marched into the zone from the center faceoff, split the defense, and buried a snapshot to go up 2-0 within the first minute of play on the first two shots of the game.  Things went from bad to worse and U.S.eh took a 8-0 lead (outshooting the Mighty Drunkards 19-4) after one.  The team continued to pour it on in the second and third period, leading 11-1 after two and winning the game 16-1 in the highest scoring game and largest margin of victory on record.

Dave Letarte, Harry Lewis, Ian Butts, Corey Fossa, and Pedro Slayton all recorded hat tricks and forward Clyde Glenn had a goal as well.  27 points (goals and assists) were recorded by the team.

The lone Mighty Drunkards goal came from Bob Cowles in the second period, assisted by Tom Maldonado.

Goalie Barney Slayton was nearly perfect on the night, only allowing 1 goal on the 15 shots sent his way (.933 Save%).  The game improved Slayton's GAA to 4.47 on the season.  At the other end, Noullet was completely shelled and never found his footing in net.  He made 36 saves on 52 shots (.692 Save%) and was visibly out-of-sorts. This dropped Noullet to second place in season Save % (.856) behind hot rookie C-Men goaltender Dan Leadon (.859 Save %).

Despite the lopsidedness of the game, the game was penalty-free.

Afterwards, C-Men captain Dan Corso took to Twitter to comment, "Good for Noullet.  He got what he deserved for calling me out on my three goal season.  He's a bum, and I scoff at his misfortune. #loser  #lol@noullet  #iwishthiswererollerhockey"

U.S.eh has now won 11 consecutive games and has clinched the President's Trophy for first place in the league.  By contrast, after winning their first 6 of 9 games to start the season, the Mighty Drunkards have now dropped their last 7 straight.

CHABL Week-in-hockey update -- 1/30 - 2/8/2018

2/8/2018 – 1:10pm

Mighty Drunkards vs C-Men – Tuesday, Jan. 30st

Last week, the C-Men defeated the Mighty Drunkards 8-4 in CHABL (Columbus Hockey Adult B League; I just coined that now lol) action.  The Drunkards were without goaltender Josh Noullet for the first time in the season and called up Chris Miller to tend the net.  Miller was peppered by a high-powered C-Men offense and turned aside 39 of the 47 shots on goal (.833 Save% on the night).  In goal for the C-Men, Dan Leadon made his second consecutive start (in relief of Mike Robinson, shoulder, out for the season).   The C-Men seem to have found their replacement goaltender in Leadon coming down the stretch.   On the evening, Dan turned aside 20 of the 24 attempts sent his way (.833 Save %).

The C-Men won each period on the evening, outscoring the Mighty Drunkards 3-1 in the 1st, 2-1 in the 2nd, and 3-2 in the 3rd for the 8-4 victory.

Goal scoring for the C-Men came from Jeff Lesmeister (2G 2A), John Hubbard (2G 1A), Mike “Chili” Brooks (1G 3A), and Raimo Mansikkaoja (1G 1A).  Ryan Smith (2A), Dan Corso (2A), and Don Terkalas (1A) also had points on the evening.  Terkalas was held without a goal for only the fourth time on the season.  His best opportunity came on a breakaway, but the Silver Stallion was unable to solve goaltender Chris Miller and was stonewalled.  Afterwards, Miller was available for a quote, “I mean… yeah, it was a busy night.  Lots of shots.  But, y’know… I shut down the Silver Stallion on a breakaway… pretty much embarrassed him.  Make sure that gets in the write-up.  Stoned!!”

For the Drunkards, rookie newcomer Tom Maldonado made his presence felt with a three point evening (2G 1A).  Bob Cowles and Justin Nabors also had goals on the evening.  And, Brian Weave (2A) and Wally Rutecki (1A) added apples as well.

U.S.eh vs. Mighty Drunkards – Thursday, Feb. 1st

Game cancelled due to ice conditions and rescheduled for 2/27/2018.

C-Men vs Mighty Drunkards – Tuesday, Feb. 6th

This past Tuesday, the C-Men faced off against the Mighty Drunkards.  After starting the first half of the season in first place, the Drunkards have been in a slide and have lost five straight coming into the game.

The story of the first two periods of play was goaltending.  The first period ended in a 0-0 tie (SOG 13-13).  In the second, each team tallied goals while the shots remained perfectly even (SOG 22-22 through two).

However, the C-Men were finally able to take control of the game in the third period as their goaltender continued to be a wall backstopping the team.  The teams headed into the third with a 1-1 tie.  However, the C-Men added 15 shots on goal in the third to the Drunkards’ 9 in the frame and the C-Men scored 4 times in the period while the Drunkards were only able to add one goal.  When the final buzzer sounded, the C-Men skated to a 5-3 victory.  Since snapping their 7-game losing streak, the C-Men have now won 3 of their last 5 contests.

John Hubbard had his second consecutive two-goal night (2G 0A) for the C-Men, scoring both the first and last goals of the game.  Chili Brooks scored the second goal of the game (1G 1A) for his club.  Captain Dan Corso added the third goal shorthanded off the face-off (1G 0A) with a fluttery fanned end-over-end shot off the heel of his stick that fooled goaltender Noullet.  After the game, Noullet had this to say about the shot, “Yeah.. I mean, all night long the C-Men were peppering me with well-placed shots, one-timers, and great puck movement resulting in shots on goal.  So I couldn’t have been more surprised when Corso floats in a stinker that a Bantam goalie would’ve had.  And, I waved at it twice before it got there and it just went in.  Tough weak goal, and I’d love to have it back.  I mean, the guy hasn’t scored since… what… October?”  To correct the goaltender, Dan Corso’s last goal was actually tallied back on November 16th in a 7-5 loss to U.S.eh.  Corso’s goal on Tuesday moved him to 26th place in goal scoring with three goals on the season, just two places behind teammate power-forward Flip Weaver on the leaderboard.  Also scoring was aging veteran Don Terkalas (1G 2A).  Mr. T’s goal was the game-winning tally on the evening.  Also, Jerome Boom Boom Bechard had an assist in the contest.

The Mighty Drunkards put their best game on the ice in a month, but were unable to solve goaltender Dan Leadon for much of the evening.  Connor Rosenbaum (1G 0A), Wally Rutecki (1G 0A), and Justin Nabors (1G 0A) all tallied while Tom Maldonado, Brian Weaver, and Garrett Rosenbuam each had assists in the contest.  The Drunkards management said they were encouraged with the play of their skaters on the night, and rumors that the team was looking to move to Quebec were unfounded.

In net for the C-Men, new starting goaltender Dan Leadon finished his third consecutive start in style.  He played solid positional goaltending all night and turned aside 28 of the 31 shots (.903 Save%) in a statement victory that erased any question on if Leadon was ready or not for The Show.  His counterpart for the Drunkards, Noullet, pulled out of his recent slump with a solid game in net himself, stopping 32 of the 37 biscuits sent his way (.865 Save%).

Hockey action continues tonight (2/8/2018 at 9pm) as the Mighty Drunkards continue their homestand as they face off against the first place U.S.eh squad.  The first 100 fans will receive free admission first row behind-the-glass premium seating.

U.S.eh continue win streak, taking both games in last week's action.

1/30/2018 – 3:30pm

Last week in hockey action, U.S.eh played both games and skated away with two victories, defeating the Mighty Drunkards in a landslide 11-2 victory Tuesday and then knocking off the C-Men Thursday night 6-2.

In the first game of the week, U.S.eh outshot the Drunkards by the greatest margin of the season, putting a record 62 shots on goal while giving up 23.  The depleted Mighty Drunkards roster was boosted by the acquisition of Tom Maldonado (0G 1A on the evening), but the team was unable to get any sort of sustained attack going under the onslaught of offensive U.S.eh firepower.  Steve Pastor and Bob Cowles netted the Mighty Drunkards goals and Pat Holland also tallied an assist.

For U.S.eh, Jacob Ahle continued his hot streak with a three goal night.  Additionally, Ian Butts had 6 points (2G 4A), Dave Letarte, recently acquired from the Drunkards, enacted revenge with a 5 point night (2G 3A).  Captain Colby Burling had a 4 point evening (2G 2A), and defenseman Harry Lewis tallied 2 points (1G 1A).  Also, Chase Brandenburg added 2 assists and forward Clyde Glenn had an assist as well.

In net, Drunkards goaltender Josh Noullet continued to struggle, giving up a season high 11 goals on 62 shots against (.823 Save%).  His counterpart Barney Slayton, by contrast, has seemed to find his stride as the season has progressed.  Slayton turned aside 21 of the 23 shots sent his way (.913 Save%) to backstop his team to the win.

The loss is the Mighty Drunkards fourth in a row, and the team has been outscored 32 to 13 during the losing streak.  Team team looks to bounce back tonight as they face of against the C-Men (1/30/2018, 9pm EST).

In Thursday night hockey action, U.S.eh faced off against the last-place C-Men.  U.S.eh jumped out to an early lead, scoring the first three goals in the opening frame before the C-Men answered to make the score 3-1 after one.  The U.S.eh squad started the second period just like the first, and tacked two more goals, extended their lead to 5-1.  The C-Men answered in the final minute of the second, making the score 5-2 after two.  However, goalie Barney Slayton was perfect in the third and the U.S.eh boys added a sixth goal, and the final buzzer sounded with a 6-2 U.S.eh victory.

Goal scoring for the C-Men came from  by Dangerous Donny Terkalas (1G 0A) and Rowdy Ryan Smith (1G 0A).  Jeff Lesmeister (0G 2A) and Dan Corso (0G 1A) also added apples to the goals.

For U.S.eh, scoring was led by sneaky forward Jacob Ahle (1G 3A).  This was Ahle’s last game on the season, as he is moving out of the area.  However, he finished his season with a league-leading 29 goals, 10 assists, and 39 total points in just 14 games played (averaging 2.79 points per game).  Dave Letarte and Clyde Glenn both had 3 point evenings (1G 2A each).  Blue-liner Chase Brandenburg contributed with 2 points (1G 1A).  And, Ian Butts and Pedro Slayton each tallied a goal on the night.

Between the pipes for the C-Men, Dan Leadon made his debut for the team.  Leadon was solid in net, making strong technical saves while turning aside 31 of the 37 shots sent his way (.838 Save %).   For U.S.eh, Barney mirrored his Tuesday night performance exactly, once again stopping 21 of 23 (.913 Save %).

The U.S.eh continue to roll, extending their win streak to an incredible 10 games.

Hockey action returns to the Columbus Ice Rink tonight as the C-Men (3-11-0-1) face off against the Mighty Drunkards (6-7-0-0) at 9pm.  We’ll see you there!

U.S.eh edge C-Men in Offensive Thriller

1/19/2018 - 5:15pm

In Thursday night hockey action, team U.S.eh was able to squeak by the C-Men 7-6.

The C-Men were coming off an overpowering win and were looking to build on that momentum.  Unfortunately, they ran into a U.S.eh team equal to the task.  Goaltender Barney Slayton was particularly strong for the majority of the contest and he frustrated the C-Men squad on numerous occasions throughout the evening.

U.S.eh held the offensive advantage for the first two periods and took a 6-3 lead into the third period.  The C-Men pulled to within one midway through the third, but U.S.eh scored with 3 minutes remaining to go up 7-5.  The C-Men answered thirty seconds later to get within one again.  With under a minute to play, the C-Men pulled their goaltender and seemed to tie the game up as Don Terkalas put the puck in the net with 12 seconds on the clock.  But, the referees had deemed that they had lost sight of the puck and waved off the goal.  So, the final buzzer sounded with a U.S.eh 7-6 victory.

Scoring for U.S.eh was led by forward Jacob Ahle's hat trick.  The hat trick was Ahle's sixth hat trick on the season, and he's averaging 2.67 points per game.  The goals further solidified Ahle's spot as the league leader in goals (25) and total points (32).  Defensemen Harry Lewis (2G 0A), Dave "Letarte (1G 1A), and Colby Burling (1G 0A) also contributed with goals on the evening.  Despite having zero assists on the night, Burling maintained his spot in 2nd place in league assists.  Grindy forward Clyde Glenn tacked on four assists.  The performance moved Glenn up to the number one spot in the league for assists with 16.

C-Men d-man Jeff Lesmeister (2G 2A) led the way in scoring for his team.  Don "The Phenomenon" Terkalas had a three point night (1G 2A).  This moved the Silver Stallion into 5th in overall goal scoring and 4th in overall points in the league.  Mike "Chili" Brooks put up a goal and an assist, moving him into third place in league assists.  Ryan Smith continued his offensive hot streak with a goal on the evening, extending his goal scoring streak to two games.  And, Finnish forward Raimo Mansikkaoja returned to the ice for the C-Men and scored a goal for his team.  Jerome Bechard tacked on an assist as well.

In net for U.S.eh, Barney Slayton was exceptional and provided big saves at key moments in the contest.  He was able to turn aside 27 of the 33 pucks sent his way.  Barney's GAA slipped slightly to 5.18, but he still maintains the best GAA in the league for goaltenders playing at least two games.

The C-Men are continuing to look for a goaltender to step up with starter Mike Robinson going down for the season with a shoulder surgery.  Last night, Noullie the Goalie debuted for the team (the fifth goaltender to take the ice for the team on the season).  The aging goaltender was unable to lift the team, though, and gave up 7 goals on 36 shots.  The C-Men's hunt for a solid starting goaltender continues.

After the game, we caught up with self-proclaimed superstar Don Terkalas.  When asked what the key to the C-Men season was, Terker the Twerker had this to say, "Our team is about having fun before the game and having a beer after the game."

Coming up next week, U.S.eh (11-2-0-1) looks to continue their incredible 8 game winning streak as they face off against the Mighty Drunkards (6-6-0-0) on Tuesday, January 23rd.  The Drunkards are in a bit of a slump, and their .500 record is mirrored in their goals differential (63 goals for and 63 goals against on the season).

Then Thursday night, the C-Men (3-10-0-1) look to get revenge on U.S.eh in a rematch of last night's action.  As a team, the C-Men are averaging 5.36 goals per game while giving up 7.00 goals per game.

Seven Game Losing Streak Snapped as C-Men Crush the Mighty Drunkards

1/18/2018 - 5:11pm

The Mighty Drunkards returned to action Tuesday night following the holiday break and faced off against the C-Men in B League hockey action.

From the opening faceoff, the C-Men's offense was buzzing and dominated puck control for much of the period.  Jerome Bechard opened up the scoring just past the halfway mark in the first period.  Then, within the next two minutes Phillip "Flip" Weaver and John Hubbard netted goals and gave the C-Men an early 3-0 lead.  The Drunkards answered late in the first as Brandon Healy found the back of the net with 59 seconds remaining in the period.  After one, the C-Men led 3-1 and outshot the Mighty Drunkards 14 to 3 in the period.

The second period saw an even greater increase in the C-Men offensive attack.  The team controlled the neutral zone and broke out of their own zone very well in the period, turning their puck possession time into 20 second period shots on goal.  For much of the period, no scoring took place.  However, Hubbard finally broke through with five minutes left in the second, scoring his second on the evening by tucking a low shot through Drunkards' goaltender Noullet's five-hole.  Again within a two minute span, his team added two more goals as Ryan Smith put home a wrist shot through a screen and Jeff Lesmeister scored a breakaway goal stick side.  Despite being down 6-1 at this point, the Mighty Drunkards battled back with two goals in quick succession as they beat C-Men goalie Chris Miller twice in the final minute of the period (goals by Bob Cowles and Steve Pastor).  Heading into the third, the C-Men had a 6-3 lead and some renewed life.

Quickly, though, the C-Men squashed any hope for a miraculous comeback.  One minute into the third, Ryan Smith scored his second of the game.  A minute later, John Hubbard completed the hat trick with a blistering one-timer from Boom-Boom Bechard.  The C-Men stretched the lead to 9-3 as Jeff Lesmeister scored his second goal of the game with 8 minutes remaining.  The Drunkards answered with a goal from Justin Nabors with 5 minutes left in the third, but it was too little too late and the C-Men snagged their first win since November 14th.

C-Men John Hubbard (3G 0A), Ryan Smith (2G 1A), and Jerome Bechard (1G 2A) all had three-point nights.  Also contributing with points were Jeff Lesmeister (2G 0A), Flip Weaver (1G 1A), and Dan Corso (0G 2A).  Danglin' Don Terkalas, coming off his first hat trick of the season, was absent from the scoresheet tonight.  This is the first game of the season that the Silver Stallion was held to zero points.  Pointman John Hubbard's three point night moved him up to 2nd in overall goal scoring and 2nd in league points (trailing U.S.eh's Jacob Ahle in both categories).

For the Mighty Drunkards, both Justin Nabors and Bob Cowles contributed with one goal and two assists each.  The three-point night moved Cowles up to fourth in overall points.  Steve Pastor and Brandon Healy also had goals on the evening.

In goal for the C-Men, Chris Miller made his B League season debut with the win.  Miller didn't let his nerves at being called up to The Show get the best of him, and Miller turned aside 17 of the 21 shots sent his way.

For the Drunkards, goaltender Josh Noullet gave up a season-high 9 goals.  These 9 goals against dropped his GAA to 5.26 on the season, allowing U.S.eh goaltender Barney Slayton (5.10 GAA, first in the league of goaltenders playing more than one game) to leapfrog past him in the GAA race.  He looked exhausted at times and could stand to increase his off-ice training to provide a solid start-to-finish game for his team.  He did make 46 saves on 55 shots (the 55 shots against also a season high).  So, despite dropping a bit in goals against, he maintained his position in Save % leading the league (of goaltenders playing more than one game) with a .876 Save %.

Next up, the C-Men look to build off their win as they take on U.S.eh tonight (Thursday, 1/18) at 9pm.

Victorious Mighty Drunkards Put Down C-Men

12/19/2017 – 3:01 pm

The Mighty Drunkards faced off against the C-Men Thursday night in Adult B Columbus Hockey action.  \Both teams came to the ice with depleted rosters missing key players, and expert hockey analysts and bar room experts alike were having trouble predicting the likely outcome of the contest before the opening faceoff.

In the end, the teams played three periods that were nearly mirror images of each other.   In each period, the Mighty Drunkards found the net twice and the C-Men scored once per period.  Final score on the evening was 6-3 Mighty Drunkards.   The victory brought the Drunkards one point out of first place, while the C-Men’s loss was their fifth consecutive defeat.  On their losing streak, the C-Men have been outscored 33 to 18.

Goal production for the Mighty Drunkards was led by defenseman Garrett Rosenbaum (3G 0A on the evening).   Both Connor Rosenbaum and Bob Cowles had two point nights (1G 1A each).  The Drunkards’ Brian Weaver netted the other goal on the evening, and David Letarte (contributing points in both of his appearances on the season) and captain Steve Pastor both contributed with assists.

The C-Men received goals from Don “the Swan” Terkalas, Raimo “Got Game-o” Mansikkaoja, and Jerome “Boom Boom” Bechard (his first of the season in his first appearance).  Also, the C-Men received apples from captain Dan Corso and goaltender Mike Robinson (the first point of any kind by a goaltender this season).

Shots on goal were close on the evening, with the C-Men taking a slight edge and outshooting the Mighty Drunkards 39 to 37.  Drunkards goaltender Noullet was able to turn aside 36 of the 39 shots on the evening (.923 Save% on the night, which moved him back into first place in league save percentage on the season).  At the other end of the ice, C-Men goaltender Robinson was able to do more than just add an assist as he stopped 31 of his 37 shots against.

B League action continues tonight (Dec. 19th, 9pm) as the home team Mighty Drunkards (6-3-0-0) look to build on their momentum as they face off against the well-rested first-placed visiting U.S.eh squad (6-2-0-1).  All fans wearing a #53 Josh Noullet goaltender jersey will receive free admission to the game.

Strong Goaltending Not Enough to Save C-Men from Defeat at the hand of U.S.eh.

12/14/2017 - 2:33 pm

U.S.eh continues to roll (outscoring opponents 20 - 8 and outshooting opponents 147 - 74 in their last three games) as they defeated the C-Men 7 - 4 Tuesday night.

The team wasted no time in putting the C-Men behind the eight ball, as they came out flying in the first.  U.S.eh scored three goals in the first 2.5 minutes of the period (Chase Brandenburg netting two goals and Jacob Ahle getting the other).  The C-Men's Conrad Kress was able to answer with a sneaky goal of his own with 6:17 to go in the first.  But, U.S.eh took the wind out of their sails even more as Ian Butts scored with just 0:22 left in the period and gave his team a 4 - 1 lead after one.

In the second period, U.S.eh scored the only goal of the period (Jacob Ahle scoring for U.S.eh).   The C-Men were unable to solve Barney Slayton in the second, and the period ended with U.S.eh taking a commanding 5 - 1 lead into the final frame.

In the third period, the game had a back-and-forth quality to it as the teams traded goals.  First, the C-Men's Mike Brooks scored with 7:49 to go in the period.  U.S.eh's Harry "No-Mo-Flow" Lewis answered with 5:49 remaining.  Phillip "Flip" Weaver found the net for the C-Men under a minute later to bring the game to within three.  But, Joe Carothers scored on the Power Play for U.S.eh and the lead proved insurmountable for the C-Men.  The final horn sounded with U.S.eh taking the victory 7 - 4.

U.S.eh scoring was once again led by forward Jacob Ahle (2G 2A).  Ahle has now moved to first place in the league in goals scored (with 14) and second place in overall points (with 19).  Both Harry Lewis and Joe Carothers had three point nights (1G 2A each).  Chase Brandenburg played his best game of the season, scoring two goals on the evening.  Also, Ian Butts had one goal and Nick Grace had one assist.

C-Men scoring came Mike Brooks, Flip Weaver, and Conrad Kress (one goal each) and assists from Don Terkalas and Raimo Mansikkaoja.  Mansikkaoja has quietly moved up to sixth place in overall scoring with his assist.

In goal for U.S.eh, Barney Slayton turned aside 20 of 23 shots.  He was steady in net all night and made a big breakaway save on Don Terkalas late in the third to keep his team up 6 to 3 (at the time).  Barney was near-flawless in the first two periods, only allowing one goal.  But, he gave up two goals in the third as the C-Men increased shot production and scoring chances in the final period.

Despite getting the loss, C-Men goalkeeper Mike Robinson had his best performance of the season in goal.  He faced 55 shots on goal (a league season high), and made 48 saves.  He faced multiple rebound chances throughout the evening and was very solid, especially on low shots, all night.  He also made a highlight reel stretch glove save on a centering pass one-timer while helping kill a five minute major penalty.

Hockey action continues tonight as the C-Men host the Mighty Drunkards.  Tonight features the debut of newly-acquired C-Men defenseman Jerome "Boom Boom" Bechard.  Bechard comes out of retirement to try to boost the depleated C-Men roster and help the team pull out of its current losing streak.  Bechard has signed on with a one-year deal and will move into free agency at the end of the season.

12/12/2017 - 12:57 pm

U.S.eh knocked off the Mighty Drunkards Thursday night by a score of 6-3 to take over first place in the standings.   U.S.eh has won its last two games by outscoring their opponent 13 to 5 in the last two outings and outshooting the opposition 92 to 51.  The Mighty Drunkards had their own two game win streak snapped.

U.S.eh came out flying in the game and Jacob Ahle found the back of the net just 22 seconds into the game.   U.S.eh’s Corey Fossa tacked on a goal less than a minute later, and with three minutes elapsed in the first period U.S. eh’s Ian Butts scored and gave his team and early large lead 3-0.   The Drunkards then answered with a goal of their own as they settled down a bit and Brian Weaver scored.  But, the period ended with the ice significantly tilted in the favor of U.S.eh with a score of 3-1.

Jacob Ahle took control early in the second, scoring two minutes into the period and then completing his hat trick with just under eight minutes to go in the frame.  The Mighty Drunkards answered 30 seconds later as Justin Nabors scored, but the teams went into the locker room with U.S.eh up 5-2.

In the third, both teams played strong hockey and matched up pretty well.  And, both teams (David Letarte for the Mighty Drunkards and Tyler McCrea for U.S.eh) scored one goal each.  And, it was too little too late for the Drunkards as they fell to U.S.eh with a final score of 6 – 3.  The Mighty Drunkards were outshot in the game 51 to 26.

Scoring for U.S.eh was once again led by Jacob Ahle (3G 0A).  The hat trick was Ahle’s second consecutive hat trick and his third on the season.  Corey Fossa (1G 1A), Ian Butts (1G 1A), and Colby Burling (0G 2A) all contributed with two points on the night.  Tyler McCrea added on a goal (and has scored three goals in his last two games).  And, Cyde Glenn continued his over-one-point-per-game average by adding an assist in the contest.

Mighty Drunkards scoring was led by David Letarte (1G 1A), playing in his first game of the season for the Drunkards.  Also, both Brian Weaver and Justin Nabors tallied goals on the evening.  And Connor Rosenbaum kept a six game point streak alive by adding an assist in the game.

Getting the W in goal for U.S.eh was Dan Leadon.  Leadon is posting a .852 Save% and 3.85 GAA for the Dutch Rudders in CHA Adult C League play and got the call-up for the game.  The big lights in “the show” didn’t seem to impact Leadon’s nerves, as he turned aside 23 of the incoming 26 shots on goal on the evening and was more-than equal to the task.

Mighty Drunkards goalie Josh Noullet started off shaky in the game (giving up three goals in under three minutes) but was able to turn it around as the night went on.  Still, U.S.eh proved too much on the evening and six goals found their way past the netminder.  Noullet faced a large shot count on the evening, and he made 45 saves on the 51 shots sent his way.

Adult B League hockey action continues tonight (12/12/2017) at the Columbus Ice Rink as the C-Men (2-6-0-0) play in front of their home crowd looking for revenge against the visiting U.S.eh (5-2-0-1).  Puck drops at 9pm, and the 1000th fan through the doors will receive a free photoshoot with their favorite CHA hockey player (prize package valued at $4500.00, no transfers or alterations to the prize, please.  Photoshoot will be scheduled after the game.  Proof of winning required).  We’ll see you all there.

C-Men Sputter and Fall 7-2 to U.S.eh

12/7/2017 - 3:23 pm

U.S.eh put an impressive performance together Tuesday night in Adult B hockey action as they defeated the C-Men by a score of 7-2.

The C-Men were once again without John Hubbard (who is skating with the All-Army Team; Let’s all give him a round of applause /clap) and JP Sriberg on the evening, but seemed razor focused in the locker room prior to the game.  However, U.S.eh came out flying and caught the C-Men on their heels early.  Ian Butts opened up scoring three minutes into the first period.  Then, in a span of four minutes, U.S.eh poured on with three more goals as Tyler McCrea, Jacob Ahle, and John Thomason all scoring and giving U.S.eh a 4-0 lead. They held this lead and the first period ended with the same score.

In the second, they quickly tacked on a fifth goal just 1:40 into the period as Jacob Ahle netted his second past Mike Robinson. However, the C-Men turned to the Silver Stallion himself, Don Terkalas, as he opened up scoring with a blistering rocket on an unassisted goal.  Inspired by these heroics, Jeff Lesmeister also found the back of the net in the period for the C-Men and closing the deficit to 5-2.  But the U.S.eh skaters weren’t done yet, and the Wiry Winger Tyler McCrea netted his second of the game with just 0:03 left on the clock in the second.  The teams headed to the second intermission with U.S.eh leading 6-2.

Only one third period goal was scored as Jacob Ahle completed his hat trick with a power play goal with 5:29 remaining in the third and giving U.S.eh the 7-2 victory.  U.S.eh went 1 for 2 on the Power Play and the C-Men were 0-1 on the man advantage.  All three penalties came in the third period.  The U.S.eh victory takes them to 4-2-0-1 on the season and just one point out of first place.  The C-Men fall to 2-6-0-0 and have dropped three consecutive games.

Jacob Ahle took home star-of-the-game honors with his hat trick performance for U.S.eh.  This is Ahle’s second hat trick on the season and he’s averaging two points per game on the year. Tyler McCrea also had a pair of goals and an assist on the evening.  John Thomason contributed with one goal and one assist.  Forward Ian Butts had U.S.eh’s other goal on the evening.  Additionally, Clyde Glenn, Corey Fossa, and Joe Carothers each had assists.

For the C-Men, Don Terkalas had one goal (and has scored one goal in five consecutive games where he’s participated).  And, Jeff Lesmeister scored the other C-Men goal on the night (averaging 1.33 points per game on the season).  Michael Brooks also had an assist in the game.

Netminder Barney Slayton had his best game of the season, statistically, as he handled 23 of the 25 shots sent his way (.920 SV%).  Between the pipes for the C-Men, Mike Robinson faced an offensive onslaught of 41 shots and made 34 saves on the night.

Next up Thursday night, the Mighty Drunkards face off against U.S.eh for a battle for first place in the league.  In celebration of Star Wars: The Last Jedi (in theatres December 15th), the league is hosting a Star Wars night for its fans tonight.  The first 100 fans in Star Wars costume will receive free admission and also will be granted access to one-on-one post-game interviews with their favorite players.  We’ll see you there!

Mighty Drunkards Win Streak Extended in Victory Over C-Men

12/3/2017 - 11:22 pm

In Thursday night B League action, the C-Men faced off against the Mighty Drunkards in a close-fought battle that saw the Drunkards come away with a 6-5 victory.

The first period saw an offensive assault by the C-Men that the Drunkards were unable to match.  The C-Men outshot their opponent 14 to 9 in the opening frame while outscoring them 2 to 0 with goals from Raimo Manikkaoja and Jeff Lesmeister.

In a complete reversal, though, the Mighty Drunkards came on fire in the second.  Four different Drunkards players scored five goals in an avalanche of offense in the period.  Brandon Healy, Connor Rosenbaum, Garrett Rosenbaum, and Wally Rutecki (two goals) all scored for the team and the second period came to a close with the Drunkards rolling with a 5-2 lead.

The C-Men were not done, however, and regrouped between periods.  In the third, superstar forward Don Terkalas found the net for the C-Men.  Also, his teammates Michael Brooks and Phil Ehorn were able to light the lamp in the period.  The Drunkards scored one goal in the third with Wally Rutecki completing his hat trick and scoring the game winning goal.  The Drunkards further secured first place with the victory, edging the C-Men 6-5 when the final buzzer sounded and improving their record to 5-2-0-0.

The teams skated extremely short-benched for the evening, which impacted the game.  The Mighty Drunkards only dressed six skaters and a goaltender on the evening.   And, the C-Men skated without league-leading scorer John Hubbard and also without JP Scriberg (4 goals, 5 assists in just 3 games played on the season).

Scoring for the Drunkards was led by the hat trick of Wally Rutecki (3 goals, 1 assist on the night).  Also, both Connor Rosenbaum and Brandon Healy had 1 goal 1 assist performances.  And, Garrett Rosenbaum added a goal as well.

For the C-Men, magic-man Don Terkalas led the way with 1 goal and 2 assists on the evening.  Jeff Lesmeister tacked on both a goal and an assist.  Michael Brooks, Phil Ehorn, and Raimo Mansikkaoja contributed with goals of their own.  And, forward Dan Corso had 3 assists and Matt Velmer also added an assist.

In net for the Mighty Drunkards, goaltender Josh Noullet was able to steer aside 31 of the 36 incoming shots.  C-Men goalie Mike Robinson also turned in a solid performance, stopping 27 of the 33 Drunkards attempts.

Next up in league action, the C-Men (2-5-0-0) travel to face the U.S.eh (3-2-0-1) on home ice tonight (Tuesday, December 5th) at 9pm at the Columbus Ice Rink.

Shootout Victory Propels Drunkards to First Place

11/29/2017 – 10:53 pm

The Mighty Drunkards wrestled lone control of first place in league standings with a thrilling shootout victory over U.S.eh Tuesday night.

In the first period of action, it was all Drunkards.  Just over a minute into the period, U.S.eh goaltender Barney Slayton made a stickhandling error and handed Drunkards’ forward Mason Versage a goal to open up scoring in the game.  Bob Cowles tacked on a second goal three minutes later, and then Versage added insult to injury by scoring again with just 0:01 remaining in the period.  Offensively, U.S.eh couldn’t get much going in the period and the first ended with the Mighty Drunkards up 3-0 while outshooting U.S.eh 15 to 7 in the period.  As the period came to a close, it felt like the Drunkards were rolling and the game was going to be a landslide victory for the team.

However, U.S.eh had something to say about that and came out in the second frame absolutely on fire.  In the first period, they had trouble connecting on passes through the neutral zone and played a large chunk of the game in their own end.  In the second, the were a new team and broke out of their own zone well.  Additionally, the team worked at setting up traffic in the slot while working shots from the point and perimeter through screens to generate sustained offense.  Just 16 seconds into the period the Mighty Drunkards committed their first penalty on the evening and U.S.eh d-man Harry Lewis made them pay, finding the back of the net after an onslaught of shots-on-goal on the power play.  Less than two minutes later Jacob Ahle beat Drunkards’ goaltender Noullet again with a beautiful deflection of a shot/pass from Corey Fossa.  Then Nicholas Grace scored an unassisted goal and tied the game at 3-3 near the halfway mark in the second period.  The Drunkards woke up at this point, however, and Conner Rosenbaum and Mason Versage both scored goals twenty seconds apart to give the Drunkards a 5-3 lead and completing Versage’s hat trick.  Harry Lewis tacked on another late period goal, though, and brought U.S.eh to within one.  The teams headed to the locker room with the Mighty Drunkards clinging to a 5-4 lead.  U.S.eh’s new strategy had paid off, and they overwhelmingly outshot their opponent 25 to 8 in the second period.

Early in the third period, it seemed that U.S.eh was going to self-destruct again.  Consecutive minor hooking penalties to Pedro Slayton and Ian Butts gave the Drunkards an opportunity to increase their third period lead with a two-man advantage.  However, the U.S.eh penalty killers were excellent and goaltender Barney Slayton made multiple strong saves to kill off the penalty and keep the game a one-goal contest.  As the second penalty was about to expire, the teams both lost their cool, tempers flared, and the referees had to sort out multiple infractions.   U.S.eh’s Corey Fossa and Nicholas Grace both were assessed minor roughing penalties and the Mighty Drunkards’ star forward Mason Versage was penalized with a minor for roughing, major for fighting, and game misconduct when all was sorted out.  The U.S.eh players tried to build on this momentum with a renewed offensive attack and were able to tie the game with just under five minutes to play in the third period at 5-5.  Defensemen Harry Lewis completed his hat trick with the goal.  Both teams increased their offensive attacks for the remaining five minutes, of the game, but neither goaltender cracked and the period came to an end with the teams deadlocked at 5 goals each.  U.S.eh again outshot the Drunkards in the period, but the margin was closer at 13 to 8.

The frenzied crowd of 6 passionate fans could barely stay in their seats as the game went to a shootout to decide a victor.  The shootout ended up going four rounds, with the Mighty Drunkards receiving shootout goals from Trevor Wood, Brian Weaver, and a shoot-out clinching slapshot goal by Garrett Rosenbaum.  For U.S.eh, Colby Burling scored the lone goal  for U.S.eh, catching goaltender Noullet with a quick low shot to the five hole.  However, U.S.eh failed to capitalize on their other three attempts (an acrobatic stick save on Harry Lewis' attempt, a glove save on Clyde Glenn's attempt, and Jacob Ahle missing the net with a high shot to the glass) and the Drunkards took home the extra point on the evening.  With the shootout loss, though, U.S.eh did pick up one point in the standings and are just one point behind the Drunkards for first place in the league.

Scoring for U.S.eh was led by Harry Lewis’ 3-goal hat trick night.  Lewis was an offensive force throughout the evening, moving the puck well in the attacking zone and taking a barrage of shots throughout the game. Nicholas Grace and Jacob Ahle also tallied for the team on the evening.   And, Tyler McCrea, Michael “Pedro” Slayton, and Corey Fossa added assists.

For the Mighty Drunkards, Mason Versage completed his hat-trick as well.  Versage quarterbacked the offensive attack for the Drunkards all night and was like a bloodhound for the puck.  Connor Rosenbaum and Bob Cowles were also able to find the back of the net, and defensemen Trevor Wood, Brandon Healy, and Garrett Rosenbaum all contributed with assists.

In net for U.S.eh, Barney Slayton had a solid game and made key saves to keep his team in the game all night, including a highlight-reel one-timer glove save to keep the game tied 5-5 late in the third.  He turned aside 26 of the Drunkards’ 31 shots on goal on the evening.  Slayton was able to overcome an early mental error in the game and provide consistent goaltending throughout the remainder of the contest, allowing his team to climb back into the game.

His counterpart at the other end of the ice, Josh Noullet, put in a strong performance in the game and shootout and gave his team the W.  A relentless offensive attack in the second and third period contributed to Noullet facing 45 total shots on goal on the evening.  However, he was equal to the task and made 40 saves on 45 shots.  This was an encouraging bounce-back effort for the goaltender after back-to-back losses leading up to the contest.

Mason Versage’s performance moved him into a tie for league leading goals at 12.  However, he is serving a one-game suspension for his penalty infractions on the evening and will be sidelined as his team faces off against the C-Men Thursdaynight at 9pm.

U.S.eh move into 1st place tie with win over C-Men

11/17/2017 - 8:52 am

In Thursday night hockey action, the C-Men fell to U.S.eh 7-5.

The goaltenders were hot early in the game, and no goals were scored until 5:55 left in the first period.  Speedy old-timer Clyde Glenn opened the scoring for U.S.eh, beating C-Men netminder Barbie Phillips with an unassisted goal.  However, C-Men captain Dan Corso answered with a goal of his own less than a minute later and C-Men d-man John Hubbard tallied with 0:17 left in the period, giving  his team a 2-1 lead headed into the tunnel after one.

Second period action featured a combined 5 goals by the two teams.  Hero C-Men superstar forward Don Terkalas netted a goal (increasing his goal scoring streak to two games) early in the period.  Returning blue-liner Corey Fossa answered Terkalas' goal with a goal of his own for U.S.eh.  The teams continued to trade goals throughout the period in back-and-forth fashion and the period horn sounded with the teams deadlocked at four goals a piece.

U.S.eh frustrated the C-Men with two goals midway through the third period, and the C-Men began to unravel.  First, Dan Corso committed a slashing infraction after the second U.S.eh third period goal.  Then, the C-Men found themselves in a sticky situation with back-to-back penalties affording U.S.eh a two-man advantage and seeing Phillip "Flip" Weaver ejected from the game.  U.S.eh converted on the power play.  John Hubbard completed his hat trick with just one second left on the third period clock.  However, it was too little too late, and U.S.eh splattered the C-Men 7-5.

Corey Fossa was U.S.eh's point leader on the night with a goal and three assists.  Forward Clyde Glenn also had a big night, adding two goals and an assist for U.S.eh.  Forwards Tyler McCrea and Michael "Pedro" Slayton each had a goal and an assist.  Ian Butts and Jacob Ahle added goals for the team as well.

For the C-Men, John Hubbard continued to produce points for his team by putting up five points (a hat trick and two assists).  Dan Corso and franchise superstar Don Terkalas also both scored goals on the night.  And, Michael Brooks, Conrad Kress, and Raimo Mansikkaoja each assisted on one goal during the game.

Barney Slayton got the start in net for U.S.eh.  He turned aside 24 of the 29 C-Men shots and played a solid controlled game in the cage.

The C-Men have started three different goaltenders in the last three games.  Goalie Barbie Phillips got the call to start last night and made 23 saves on 30 shots sent her way.

B League games takes a one-week break over the Thanksgiving holiday.  The teams return to the ice Tuesday, November 28th as the U.S.eh (3-2-0) face off against the Mighty Drunkards (3-2-0).  The winner of the contest will take sole control of first place in league standings.

Don Terkalas Names Himself Hero as C-Men Claim Lop-sided Victory

11/15/2017 - 4:10PM

The C-Men dealt the Mighty Drunkards their second consecutive loss as they skated to a 7-2 victory Tuesday night.

First period action consisted of the Drunkards peppering goaltender Mike Robinson with a barrage of shots.  He was equal to the test in the period, but Mighty Drunkards forward Connor Rosenbaum was able to solve him once in the first.  For the C-Men, they scored twice on Drunkards' goalie Noullet and the period ended with the C-Men up 2-1 and the Mighty Drunkards outshooting the C-Men 13 to 10 in the period.

In the second period, the teams increased their shot output and the goaltenders both had solid periods.  The Drunkards were able to tie the game up at 2-2 as Mason Versage scored his ninth goal on the season (tied for first in league leading goal scoring).  However, Don Terkalas made his presense known late in the 2nd period.  A hard shot from the point missed the cage wide, ricocheting off the back boards.  Terkalas one-timed the bouncing puck out of midair while avoiding a high stick on the puck, scoring the go ahead goal and giving his team a 3-2 lead heading into the locker room after two.  The C-Men outshot the Drunkards in the period 16 to 15.

In the third period, everything fell apart for the Mighty Drunkards as the C-Men unleashed a fury of four third period goals.  The turning point of the game came as the Drunkards committed back-to-back infractions and gave the C-Men an extended two-man advantage.  The team made good use of the advantage, going 2 for 2 on the power play as Scriberg and Hubbard netted power play goals in rapid succession.  The C-Men kept up the attack and the close hockey game (through two periods) ended in a lop-sided 7-2 victory for the C-Men.  The C-Men outshot the Drunkards in the period 17 to 10 in the final frame and outshot the Mighty Drunkards 44 to 38 on the evening.

Scoring for the C-Men was led by JP Scriberg (3 goals, 2 assists, 5 points on the night).  Blue-liner John Hubbard also netted a power play goal and additionally he tacked on a league single-season record 5 assists.  Raimo Mansikkaoja continued to be consistent, scoring again for the C-Men as well.  And Don Terkalas found  his way onto the scoresheet in dramatic fashion, scoring the night's game-winning goal.

The Mighty Drunkards were held to a season-low two goals on the night.  Scoring came from Connor Rosenbaum and Mason Versage, with defenseman Steve Pastor adding an assist as well.

Netminder Mike Robinson put on his best performance of the season, stopping 36 of the 38 biscuits sent his way (a .947 save percentage on the evening).  Robinson returned from injury with a vengeance and made repeated solid saves throughout the evening, frustrating the Mighty Drunkards' attack.

His counterpart at the opposite end of the ice, Drunkards' goalie Josh Noullet, stopped 37 of the 44 C-Men shots.  Despite an impressive start to the season, Noullet has hit a bit of a slump and has allowed 7 goals in consecutive losses for the team.

After the game, we were able to catch up with hero forward Don Terkalas of the C-Men.  And, while his teammate JP Scriberg netted a hat trick and five points on the evening and his goaltender Mike Robinson had a season-best performance in net, Terkalas had this to say, "I mean, I hope I'm the highlight of tomorrow's game recap.  After all, I scored the game winning goal for our team.  I'm the star.  All those other goals after that... let's face it, they were meaningless.  Nothing else really mattered in the game after I scored."

Sales of #25 Terkalas C-Men jerseys increased by 70% after the game.  Terkalas' goal moved him into 21st place in overall scoring in the league (2 goals, 1 assist, 3 points on the season).

Adult B League action continues Thursday night (11/16/2017, 9pm) as the U.S.eh skate into the Columbus Ice Rink to take on the high powered C-Men.  U.S.eh will take to the ice Thursday without star pointmen Harry Lewis and Colby Burling, opening the door for the C-Men to move into second place with a victory Thursday night.

An Avalanche of Goals Ends Drunkards Win Streak at Three

11/8/2017 - 4:47pm

In Tuesday night hockey action, team U.S.eh was able to end the Mighty Drunkards’ win streak at three.   U.S.eh secured their first win of the season, defeating the Drunkards in a high-powered offensive battle 7-6.

The game was full of penalties and goals.  The teams combined for 13 goals to make this game the highest-scoring game of the season thus far.

Goal scoring began just under five minutes into the first period, as the Drunkard’s Garrett Rosenbaum beat U.S.eh goaltender Barney Slayton by picking up his own rebound and driving it home.  U.S.eh answered quickly with their own rebound goal as John Thomason scored his first of the night slamming home a rebound after goaltender Noullet stopped Clyde Glenn’s initial shot.  Thomason tacked on his second of the night three minutes later with a long shot that fooled the goaltender and gave U.S.eh an early 2-1 lead.  However, Garrett Rosenbaum continued his goal scoring attack, scoring once on the power play and then completing his hat trick with just under two minutes remaining in the first.  The period ended with the Mighty Drunkards clinging to a 3-2 lead.

The Drunkards started to lose discipline in the second frame.   The team committed two of their four penalties during the second, and U.S.eh took advantage.  Defenseman Corey Fossa unleashed a rocketing wrist shot from the slot, beating Noullet through his five hole with a power play goal to open scoring in the second and also tie the game 3-3.  The Drunkards’ Bob Cowles answered with a goal of his own on the following shift, but team U.S. eh would not be denied and continued to pour on the attack.  In a three minute span, Joe Carothers, Mike “Pedro” Slayton, and speedy old-timer Clyde Glenn all tickled the twine and the second ended with U.S.eh heading to the locker room up 6-4.  A combination of penalty problems, goaltender give-aways, and poor rebound control allowed U.S.eh to score four second period goals and also rack up 25 of their 46 shots on the evening.

U.S.eh did not let up and scored almost immediately to open the third period.  Newly-acquired defenseman Harry Lewis was able to enact some revenge against his former team, tallying his first with team U.S.eh under a minute into the period.  His team continued to dominate play for a large chunk of the third stanza.   However, the Mighty Drunkards found life late in the third when U.S.eh committed their third infraction of the night.  Bob Cowles didn’t let the power play go to waste, and he scored his second on the evening with 4:30 remaining in the contest.  47 seconds later league-leading scorer Mason Versage brought the Drunkards to within one with a goal of his own.   The Mighty Drunkards continued to attack the net for the remainder of the third, but goaltender Slayton was equal to the task and the men in blue were able to pull out their first victory of the season, winning 7-6.

The power play was a high point for the Mighty Drunkards on the night, as it has been all season.   The team went 2 for 3 (66.67%) on the man advantage on the evening, and they currently lead the league in power play conversion percentage, converting on 40.00% of their power plays on the year.   When the team commits infractions, they were perfect at penalty killing prior to the evening.   However, team U.S.eh was able to convert a power play chance during the game (going 1 for 4 on the power play).   Still, the Mighty Drunkards lead the league by killing off 8 out of 9 (88.9%) of their penalties.

The victorious U.S.eh team did a great job moving the puck around and sustaining offensive zone pressure.  This accounted for six different players scoring their seven goals on the evening.   John Thomason led the team in scoring on the evening with two goals and one assist.  Corey Fossa, Joe Carothers,  Harry Lewis, and Clyde Glenn all had one goal and one assist each.  And Pedro Slayton scored a goal as well.   Jacob Ahle also contributed to team scoring with two assists on the night.

Garrett Rosenbaum led the way for the Mighty Drunkards, scoring his first hat trick of the season and of his career in prestigious CHA league play.   The hat trick has moved Rosenbaum into second place in goals scored and total points.  He trails teammate Mason Versage, who also had a goal on the evening.  Bob Cowles had his best night offensively on the year, scoring two goals for his team.  Wally Rutecki added a pair of assists on the night as well.  Connor Rosenbaum, Trevor Wood, and Justin Nabors also assisted on goals in tonight’s game.  Nabors’ assist has taken him to a league-leading five assists on the season.

In net for U.S.eh, goalkeeper Barney Slayton started off slow.  However, his game improved throughout the contest and he was able to fend off 26 of the 32 Drunkards shots and pick up a win.  Rebound control was a strong point for Slayton on the evening.

His counterpart in net for the Drunkards, Josh Noullet, did not fare so well.  He was beaten 7 times (a season-high goals against for the goaltender) on the evening, stopping 39 of the 46 shots sent his way.  The name “Drunkard” seemed to accurately describe Noullet’s netminding on the evening.  Three of the goals against occurred due to a failure to secure rebounds, and two goals were the direct result of poor stickhandling giveaways by the goalie that deflated his team at key moments in the game.

The Military Appreciate Event brought in an average crowd of zealous fans on the night, and the official game attendance was reported at two fans.  Both fans took advantage of the promotion and spent one-on-one time with players after the game.

Action continues Thursday night (11/9 at 9pm) with the CHA Game of the Week as Corso’s C-Men (1-2-0) travel into hostile territory as they face-off against team U.S.eh (also 1-2-0) on home ice coming off a huge victory.  The C-Men have picked up free agent goaltender Josh Geiger to fill in for injured Mike Robinson (shoulder).   Robinson is being evaluated for a possibly season-ending shoulder surgery and the C-Men are pushing their salary cap as they add another goaltender to their roster.

U.S.eh hosts undefeated Mighty Drunkards Tuesday

11/6/2017 - 10:23am

The Mighty Drunkards (3-0-0) come to town to face team U.S.eh (0-2-0) Tuesday night, November 7th at 9pm.

U.S.eh is looking to pull out their first win of the season.  They've added some depth to their defensive core in last week's trade in acquiring Harry Lewis.  With his addition, the team is perfectly positioned for a strong transition game breaking out of their own end with speed.

The Mighty Drunkards are looking to continue their winning streak.  The Drunkards' game plan will likely remain the same, as they've seen great success this season providing clear lanes for their goaltender, clearing the crease quickly of rebounds, and then breaking out of their own end quickly.

Tuesday and Thursday games are also military appreciate games in honor of Veterans Day.   All military personnel and prior service will be provided free admission and can meet the players after the contest.  Each night, military fans will have the opportunity to chat with the players, receive autographs, and perhaps even share a beer.

The Mighty Drunkards extend winning streak to three games with win over the C-Men

11/3/2017 - 1:14 am

The C-Men played the first place Drunkards tight in Thursday night's action, but the Mighty Drunkards prevailed with a 6-4 victory to extend their start-of-season win streak to three games and secure the top spot in the standings.

First period action featured an aggressive offensive attack from the hungry C-Men.  Emboldened by the addition of quick defenseman Jeff Lesmeister, the C-Men pressed the attack and outshot the Drunkards 13 to 7 in the opening frame.  The pressure paid off midway through the period, and winger Raimo Mansikkaoja was able to solve Drunkards goaltender Noullet first with a tricky wrist shot.  The Drunkards answered with 1:06 left in the period as Connor Rosenbaum tallied his first goal of the season.

The second period started off with a renewed offensive push from the Mighty Drunkards.  The team netted a pair of goals (Bob Cowles and Dan Megiel scoring) in the first minute of the second period, shocking goaltender Robinson and temporarily putting the C-Men on their heels.  However, the gritty team bounced back with two rapid goals of their own.  Defensemen John Hubbard and Jeff Lesmeister scored goals just 16 seconds apart, clearly cracking goalie Josh Noullet's calm and rattling the Drunkards normally-confident defense.  However, the C-Men later committed back-to-back penalties, putting the Drunkards on an extended 5-3 advantage.  The team was quick to capitalize, as forward Garrett Rosenbaum netted the Power Play goal.  The second ended in a precarious 4-3 Drunkards lead.

In the third, the C-Men were quick off the drop of the puck, and Ryan Smith fooled the goal keeper with a snap shot stick side that tied the game at 4 just 35 seconds into the period.  The Mighty Drunkards again reached down deep and continued to plug away, and league-leading scorer #87 Sidney Cr... er..., I mean Mason Versage netted his first of the night, putting his team up 5-4.  Versage's line continued to attack, cycling the puck well in the offensive zone, and Connor Rosenbaum lit the lamp a second time on the evening, beating Robinson with a quick low shot that caught the goaltender by surprise and gave the Drunkard a 6-4 lead with just 3:30 remaining.  The C-Men pulled goaltender Robinson to try to close the gap, but were unable to find the back of the cage again and the final horn sounded with another Drunkards victory.

Forward Raimo Mansikkaoja was the offensive juggernaut for the C-Men on the evening.  Mansikkaoja scored the opening goal of the game and also added two assists.  He's now second place in overall league scoring, and is tied in league leading assists with 4.  John Hubbard, Jeff Lesmeister, and Michael Brooks also each added a goal on the night.  When asked about his goal on the evening, Hubbard remarked, "I knew [goalie Josh Noullet] thought I was going glove [on my goal], so I tucked it in short side.  Fooled him.  Ha!"

For the Mighty Drunkards, Garrett Rosenbaum was the team scoring leader on the night with one goal and a pair of assists.  Speedy forward Mason Versage continued his scoring streak, adding a goal and an assist in the game.  Bob Cowles and Dan Megiel also found the back of the goal this evening, and defenseman Trevor Wood tacked on a pair of assists.  Steve Pastor also had an assist in tonight's contest.

Between the pipes for the C-Men, goaltender Mike Robinson was notably solid in the first period and continued to play well throughout the evening.  He turned aside 27 of 33 shots and there was no sign that his shoulder injury was a factor in the contest.  Team doctor Mrs. Robinson was unavailable for comment.

Drunkards' goalie Josh Noullet put in another solid performance, stopping 30 of the 34 shots that came his way.  However, the game was Noullet's worst statistically on the season and he started to show signs of frustration when he was beaten twice in a matter of seconds.  I'm sure the Drunkards' goaltending coach is going to work with him a bit on his positioning and mental game in their next team practice.  We caught up with the goaltender after the win.  "Yeah... I mean, I let them get in my head a little bit tonight.  But I'm happy with the effort the boys put forth in front of me and we were able to edge out the win."  When we asked him about the impacts his recent weight gain have had on his game, he declined further comment.

League action continues next Tuesday, November 7th as the undefeated Mighty Drunkards (3-0-0) travel to the deep South to face team U.S.eh (0-2-0) at the Columbus Ice Rink in sunny Columbus, Georgia.

Breaking News!! Three-Way Trade Deal Shocks Hockey World

11/1/2017 - 8:35 pm

In an unheard of move, a three-way trade agreement has been reached by the C-Men, U.S.eh, and Mighty Drunkards.  Ripples of excitement and chatter have swept the entire hockey world.

First up, the C-Men have dealt gritty defenseman Patrick Holland to the Mighty Drunkards.  Pat joins an already-solid defensive team and hopes to continue that tradition of excellence that has sold many Mighty Drunkards season tickets.

Next, the Drunkards have moved speedy pointman Harry Lewis to team U.S.eh.  Lewis contributed a goal and an assist in his season debut, and we were able to catch up with to get his take on the deal.  When asked about his feelings on the move, Lewis responded, "As long as I get to play hockey, I'm happy."

To complete the deal, the C-Men have picked up Jeff Lesmeister.  Jeff will make his first appearance of the season tomorrow night as he looks to contribute to dealing the Mighty Drunkards their first loss of the season.

The Mighty Drunkards Move Into First with win over U.S.eh.

11/01/2017 - 9:25 am

Team U.S.eh fell to the Mighty Drunkards on Halloween night with a final score of 8-3.

The teams skated tight in the first period, trading shots and goaltender saves with neither team lighting the lamp until late.  Finally, Justin Nabors broke through with 1:51 to go in the first.  The period ended with the Drunkards up 1-0.

In the second frame, the Mighty Drunkards turned on the jets and poured on a frenzy of offense.  The team scored four second period goals (including a shorthanded goal by Mason Versage).  However, U.S.eh was able to crack through the Drunkards defense late in the period.  Corey Fossa split the D and scored on his own breakaway rebound with 31 seconds left in the second.  The period ended with the Mighty Drunkards ahead 5-1.

The third period was a tale of two halves.  The first half of the third period saw the goaltenders trading saves on a furry of shots.  In the second half of the period, the Drunkards dealt a seemingly-devastating blow as Harry Lewis scored the team's second shorthanded goal of the game.  However, team U.S.eh responded and tallied two late third period goals.   With the score 6-3, the team opted to pull goaltender Barney Slayton in favor of the extra attacker.  The team managed a pair of shots on goal with their goalie pulled, but the effort was for not and the Drunkards found the empty net. The Mighty Drunkards tacked on a late partial breakaway goal with 20 seconds left in the game and the final buzzer sounded with the home team winning 8-3.

Team U.S.eh's Corey Fossa was the offensive star of the game.  In addition to his breakaway rebound goal, Fossa also set up forward Jacob Ahle with a beautiful deflection goal late in the second period and he assisted on Chase Brandenburg's third period goal with a smooth one-time centering pass that Brandenburg buried top shelf.  Fossa is current in second place in league scoring through two games (2 goals, 3 assists, 5 points). Captain Colby Burling also tacked on a pair of assists on the night.

The Mighty Drunkards offense was firing on all cylinders Tuesday night.  Forward Mason Versage netted his second consecutive hat trick, scoring 3 goals and 1 assist on the night.  Versage leads the league with 6 goals and also leads the league with 8 total points through two games.  Harry Lewis scored 1 goal and 1 assist in his season debut.  Additionally, Bob Cowles, Justin Nabors, and Dan Megiel each added goals on the night.

In goal for U.S.eh, netminder Barney Slayton was solid, stopping 33 of the 40 shots coming his way on the evening.  In the opposing net, Drunkards keeper Josh Noullet put in another solid night in goal.  He was able to turn aside 32 of the incoming 35 shots and is currently leading league goaltenders with a .930 save percentage and 2.50 goals against average through two games.

Attendance dipped a bit last night (likely due to the holiday), yet 4 rabid fans took in the game glued to their seats in anticipation of each shot.

The Might Drunkards (2-0-0) continue their home stretch on Thursday night as the C-Men (1-1-0) come to town looking to even the regular season series between the two teams.  Puck drops at 9pm Thursday (11/3/2017) with game recap coverage right here on your Columbus Hockey Network.

The C-Men fall to an offensive onslaught in the Mighty Drunkard's season opener

10/27/2017 - 12:56am

The Home team C-Men came up short as the Mighty Drunkards skated to a lop-sided 9-2 victory on the road to open their season Thursday night at the Columbus Ice Rink.

For the first couple of minutes of the period, the teams traded shots as they felt each other out.  However, forward Dan Megiel opened up the scoring for the Drunkards around the five minute mark of period one.  In a three-minute span, the Mighty Drunkards pulled ahead to an early 3-0 lead in the first period.  But, the C-Men continued to get pucks to the net and broke through with a late first period goal, closing the gap to 3-1 as Don Terkalas steered home a beautiful deflection goal past goaltender Josh Noullet.

The second period tightened up as the teams focused on back-checking and smart break-out passes.  Both teams were able to get a high volume of shots on goal in the second period, but the goaltenders were up to the task.  Still, the Mighty Drunkards were able to grab a couple of goals in the period and the second frame closed with the visiting team leading 5-1.

The Mighty Drunkards continued the offensive assault in the third period and proved too much for the C-Men.  The Drunkards scored 4 times in the period.  With under a minute left, the C-Men's John Hubbard was able to rocket a rising wrist shot goal high glove side.  But, the final buzzer sounded with a 9-2 victory for the Mighty Drunkards.

Forward Mason Versage (#87) led the way for the Mighty Drunkards in scoring, tallying his first hat trick of the season and tacking on an assist as well.  Drunkards forward Daniel Megiel (#13) also lit the lamp three times for the second team hat trick of the evening.  Other team goals came from Connor Rosenbaum (#05) and defensemen Steve Pastor (#6).  Justin Nabors (#13) also contributed with 4 assists on the night.

For the C-Men, John Hubbard (#8) led the team in scoring with a goal and an assist on teammate Don Terkalas' (#25) goal.

Goaltender Josh Noullet (#53) pulled out the win for the Mighty Drunkards with a solid performance in goal, stopping 37 of the 39 shots (.949 save %) on the night.  He was supported by a hard back-checking defense that was quick to clear screens and locate rebounds throughout the evening.

In the opposite cage, Mike Robinson (#32) had a tough evening as he played through an upper body injury sustained in the third period.  Still, he was able to come away with 35 saves on the Drunkard's 44 shots on goal.  Mike Robinson is listed as day-to-day and his injury will be evaluated by the team doctor (Mrs. Robinson) before he's cleared to return to play.

Tonight's attendance was a new season record, as 8 zealous fans came out to take in the performance.

League action continues Tuesday night, October 31st as the Mighty Drunkards (1-0-0) host the visiting U.S.eh (0-1-0).
