Kraken Beers Crush Dangleberries With an Offensive Explosion

Wednesday, November 10 - 2:46pm

        BOX SCORE:  Click here

In Tuesday night CHAAAL action, the Kraken Beers continued to have the Dangleberries' number in a commanding 10-4 win.  The Kraken Beers stay undefeated against the Dangleberries on the season (4-0 in head-to-head play).

First period action saw a tight hockey game.  The 'berries were outshot 10-6 in the opening frame while trailing the Kraken 3-1 after one. However, all three Kraken goals came on breakaways and the teams were evenly matched in the period otherwise.

The second period was a different story, as the Kraken Beers blanked the Dangleberries 3-0 in the period.  Shots were close at 13-11 in the second, but Kraken keeper Barney Slayton was able to handle all 11 pucks sent his way.  At the second buzzer, the Kraken Beers held a commanding 6-1 lead.

In the third period, the Dangleberries tried to mount a comeback, scoring 3 goals in the third.  However, the Kraken Beers poured on even more offense with 4 third period goals of their own. The contest ended with the 'berries being outshot 37-28 and outscored 10-4.

Scoring for the Kraken Beers was led by Corey Fossa (2G 2A), Pat Parnell (1G 3A), John Hubbard, Collin Tate, and Josh Cogswell (2G 1A each), Noah Lake (1G 1A), and Phil Weave (0G 1A).

For the Dangleberries, Orrin Hergott led the team in scoring (2G 1A) and Tom Maldonado (1G 2A).  Gary Yacavino (1G 0A), Clyde Glenn (0G 1A), and Josh Noullet (0G 1A) also added points on the night.

The lone penalty on the night came from the Dangleberries Forward Gary Yacavino (Yacavino now leads the CHAAAL in PIM's with 6 on the season) with just over two minutes remaining in the first period.  The Dangleberries were able to kill the penalty.

In net for the Kraken Beers, keeper Barney Slayton was once again solid in net, stopping 24 of the 28 pucks sent his way (.857 Save %).  This mirrors his Season Save % of .857 (second among active goalies playing at least two games).

At the other end of the night, the woes continued for Dangleberries netminder Josh Noullet.  Noullet made 27 saves on 37 shots (.730 Save %) dropping his overall Save % to .794 on the year.  The 'berries are expected to look to goaltender Wylie Burnett in their next outing on 11/6 against the C-Men.  Burnett will be coming off extended personal leave to rejoin the team for his first action of the season.

Dangleberries Pull Out First Win of the Season as They Dismantle the C-Men 5-3

Friday, October 22 - 10:37pm

        BOX SCORE:  Click here

In Thursday night CHAAAL action, the winless Dangleberries took to the road to face-off against the undefeated C-Men.  By the end of the night, that would change as the 'berries edged the C-Men 5-3 in a close fought battle.

The teams battled hard defensively for much of the first period with neither side willing to give ground.  However, with just over three minutes to go in the first C-Men keeper Jack Rosenhammer misplayed a puck and Scorrin' Orrin Hergott was able to bury the biscuit with a Short-Handed Goal to give the Dangleberries a 1-0 lead. At the first buzzer the score remained 1-0.

The second period continued where the first left off.  Both teams played disciplined hockey throughout the middle period.  C-Men forward Seth Gilley was finally able to solve 'berries goalie Josh Noullet with just under six minutes remaining in the second. It seemed the period would end in a 1-1 tie, but Austin Eckhardt buried his first of the season for the Dangleberries with 57 seconds to go in the second giving his club a 2-1 lead.

In the final frame, the game started to open up. First, Hergott scored his second of the game (a Power Play goal) to open up a 3-1 lead three minutes in. However, the C-Men came battling back with Levi Lind scoring and then Caleb Pattillo adding a Power Play goal to tie the score 3-3 with 4:45 left in regulation.

It seemed the C-Men's undefeated streak would continue as the Dangleberries were penalized again with under three minutes to go.  However, after a flurry of Power Play shots, Hergott hit blue liner Tom Maldonado with an outlet pass and Maldonado fired a low shot past the C-Men keeper Rosenhammer to score the Dangleberries' second short-handed goal of the night and give his team a 4-3 lead with 1:26 remaining. The 'berries then put the nail in the coffin with 0:49 remaining as Orrin Hergott completed his hat trick.  The final buzzer sounded to a 5-3 Dangleberries victory.

Leading the way in scoring for the victorious Dangleberries was Orrin Hergott (3G 1A) giving him sole lead in goal scoring for the league.  Also scoring on the night was Tom Maldonado (1G 1A) and Austin Eckhardt (1G 0A).  Also tacking on an assist on the final goal of the game was goaltender Josh Noullet (0G 1A).

C-Men goal production came from defensemen Caleb Pattillo (1G 1A), Seth Gilley (1G 0A), and Levi Lind (1G 0A).  Matt "Shooter" Depuydt (in his season debut) and T.J. Runci both added one assist each.

In goal for the Dangleberries, Josh Noullet seemed to get on track after lackluster appearances in his first two games.  Noullet stopped 26 of 29 shots (.897 SV%) for the evening.

C-Men netminder Jack Rosenhammer made his season debut in the CHAAAL and turned aside 20 of the 25 pucks sent his way (.800 SV%).

After the game, C-Men Captain Don Terkalas was asked about the challenges the C-Men had much of the night in finding the back of the net. When pressed about solving Noullet specifically, he commented, "I mean, it's about time he did something. It's not that he was that great tonight.  It's that he sucked so hard in our first game against them."  Terkalas was held to zero points on the evening and was unable to register a shot on goal.

CHAAAL action continues Tuesday night (10/26 at 8:45pm) as the Dangleberries (1-2-0) return home to rematch the visiting Kraken Beers (2-1-0).  The first 100 fans will receive free ice-level admission to the contest!

The C-Men Crush the Kraken Beers to Move Into First Place Overall

Wednesday, October 20 - 8:20pm

        BOX SCORE:  Click here

The C-Men (2-0-0) defeated the Kraken Beers (1-1-0) by a score of 6-2 Tuesday night to move into first place in the CHAAAL.  In their first two games of the season, the C-Men have outscored their opponents 15-6.

In the opening frame, the Kraken Beers opened the scoring with 6:07 remaining in the period as blueliner John Hubbard broke the scoreless tie.  The C-Men answered less than two minutes later as CHAAAL rookie T.J. Runci netted his first of the season.  The first period ended with a 1-1 tie.

In the second, the C-Men widened their lead to 3-1 with goals midway through the period from Caleb Pattillo and T.J. Runci.

The C-Men scoring continued into the third as Runci finished off his hat trick three minutes into the final period, giving his team a 4-1 lead.  The Kraken were not deterred, however, and Hubbard scored his second of the contest less than a minute later.  The Kraken Beers comeback was short-lived as Caleb Pattillo found the back of the net for the second time on the evening with 7:28 to go in regulation.  Then, the C-Men's Mike Gibson scored a Power Play goal with 1:15 remaining in the game.  The final buzzer sounded with a 6-2 C-Men victory.

It was the T.J. and Caleb show for the C-Men for scoring.  T.J Runci's hat trick (3G 1A) led the team for the night with Caleb Pattillo just behind him (2G 2A).  Also scoring was Mike Gibson (1G 0A) with an apple from old-timer Don Terkalas (0G 1A).  The club finished 1 for 2 on the Power Play on the evening.  Also, the C-Men skated with just six players on the bench.

For the Kraken Beers, John Hubbard continued his scoring streak (2G 0A).  Corey Fossa, Colin Tate, and Josh Cogswell all added apples (0G 1A each).

The Kraken Beers skated without their captain Phil "Flip" Weaver and his leadership was clearly missed (Flip was out on injured reserve recovering from a bilateral orchiectomy).  Also out for the Kraken was Thomas Biggs.

C-Men netminder Cody Ross had his best outting of the young season turning aside 18 of the 20 pucks sent his way (.900 SV%).  In net for the Kraken Beers for his second consecutive start, Barney Slayton stopped 23 of 29 shots (.793 SV%).

CHAAAL hockey action continues Thursday night (10/21 at 9pm) as the Dangleberries (0-2-0) look for their first win against the first-placed C-Men (2-0-0).  We'll see you there hockey fans!

C-Men Cover the Dangleberries In Home Opener

Friday, October 15 - 1:46pm

        BOX SCORE:  Click here

The C-Men had very little rust to shake off and were dominate in their victory over the Dangleberries 9-4 in Thursday night CHAAAL action.

First period scoring began when C-Men forward Michael Gibson fired a one-timer from between the circles to beat the 'berries keeper stick side low for the opening tally 1:16 into the period. Seth Gilley scored next at the midway point of the opening frame, giving the C-Men a two goal lead. Next C-Men center Levi Lind netted his first goal of the season, scoring on an odd man rush pass from winger Don Terkalas.  The first period ended in a 3-0 C-Men lead with the home team outshooting the Dangleberries 23-9 in the period.

The second period continued with the C-Men onslaught. With 4:04 remaining, the C-Men were up 5-0 with second period goals from Levi Lind and Caleb Pattillo.  The Dangleberries were able to finally break through C-Men goalie Cody Ross with 2:29 to go in the second period.  Chris "Tut" Tutuska netted his first of the season to close the gap to 5-1.

In the third, back-to-back goals from C-Men captain Don Terkalas deflated the 'berries and gave the C-Men a 7-1 lead with 6:59 remaining in the game.  Dangleberries forward Chris Tutuska scored his second of the game, cutting the lead to 7-2.  The C-Men kept pressing the attack, however, as defenseman Jerome "Boom Boom" Bechard buried a slap shot breakaway goal and then Levi Lind completed the hat trick slipping the puck under 'berries netminder Josh Noullet's pad to put the C-Men up 9-2 with 3:53 remaining in the third. The Dangleberries weren't ready to call it quits, though, and battled to the final buzzer.  With under 1:30 remaining, the 'berries added goals from Gary Yacavino and Orrin Hergott to close the score to 9-4 by the final buzzer.  Also noteworthy, neither team was penalized in the contest.

Leading the scoring for the victorious C-Men was Levi Lind (3G 3A) and Don Terkalas (2G 1A).  Also tallying for the home team was Seth Gilley (1G 2A), Jerome Bechard (1G 1A), and Caleb Pattillo and Michael Gibson scoring one goal each.

For the Dangleberries, Chris Tutuska (2G 0A), Clyde Glenn (0G 3A), and Orrin Hergott (1G 1A) led the way. Also adding a goal was Gary Yacavino (1G 0A ).  Nadine de Nijs (0G 2A) and Richelle Skarbowski (0G 1A) also contributed with apples on the goals.

In net for the C-Men, Cody Ross started his season stopping 19 of the 23 shots sent his way (.826 Save %). Ross was solid in the early stages of the game, stopping everything the 'berries sent his way until 2:29 remaining in the second period.  At the opposite end, Dangleberries keeper Josh Noullet faced a CHAAAL season-high 47 C-Men shots on goal.  Noullet was able to fend off 38 of the 47 shots (.809 Save %).  Noullet has not lived up to the high expectations coming out of training camp, and the Dangleberries are looking forward to the return of starting goaltender Wylie Burnett in early November.

After the contest, we caught up with C-Men defenseman Boom Boom Bechard and asked why he elected to go with a slap shot as his shot selection on the breakaway.  He had this to say, "Hey listen, I never deke. That's not what I do. Breakaway or not, I'm just going to close my eyes and blast away."  If it's not broke, don't fix it they say.

CHAAAL action continues Tuesday night (10/19 at 8:45pm EST) as the battle for first place kicks off between the visiting C-Men (1-0-0) and the Kraken Beers (1-0-0).  The Kraken Beers are hosting a military night special.  Service members can receive free admission to the game with a valid military I.D.  Thank you for your service.

Kraken Beers Defeat the Dangleberries in the Thrilling CHAAAL Season Opener

Wednesday, October 13 - 12:48am

        BOX SCORE:  Click here

The visiting Kraken Beers defeated the heavily-favored home team Dangleberries  6 to 2 Tuesday night to a capacity crowd at the Columbus Civic Center.

Clyde Glenn opened the scoring for the Dangleberries just 1:17 into the first period beating Kraken goaltender Barney Slayton with a sneaky shot just inside the post on the first shot of the game.  The Kraken immediately answered with a barrage of goals.  First, John Hubbard found the back of the net for the Kraken Beer just 17 seconds later.  Hubbard quickly scored again only 4 seconds after his first tally.  Then, Noah Lake beat Dangleberries goalie Josh Noullet less than a minute later (with the Kraken scoring on 3 of their first 5 shots in the game).  Less than five minutes into the first period and the game had all the signs of a high-scoring thriller.

However, both goaltenders tightened up and period one ended in a 3 -1 Kraken Beers lead.

The second period saw both teams firing a barrage of shots at the goaltenders.  However, neither team could break through until Kraken's veteran forward Ryan Smith netted his first tally of the season with 4:34 remaining in the middle frame.  The Dangleberries continued to have trouble solving Kraken netminder Slayton and the period ended with a 4 -1 Kraken Beers lead.

The Dangleberries battled back in the third, with their star forward Scorin' Orrin Hergott (Hergott lead all CHAAAL scoring in the 2018-2019 regular season with 49G  49A  98 PTS) stuffing one home to narrow the lead to 4-2.  The 'berries continued to fire pucks at the net but were unable to tickle the twine again.  The Kraken Beers continued to pour on an offensive onslaught and with under three minutes remaining Colin Tate and Corey Fossa both scored breakaway goals to put the nail in the Dingleberries' coffin.  The final buzzer sounded with a 6-2 Kraken Beers victory.

Leading the way for the victors  was defensemen John Hubbard (2G 0A).  Also adding points for the Kraken Beers were Colin Tate and Noah Lake (1G 1A each) and Ryan Smith (1G 0A).

For the Dangleberries, both Clyde Glenn and Orrin Hergott tallied (1G 0A each) and defensemen and team captain Tom Maldonado added an apple (0G 1A).

The Kraken Beers went 0 for 1 on the Power Play with the game's only penalty being assessed to Clyde Glenn with 10 seconds remaining in the contest.

In net, Barndoor Barney Slayton came ready to play and put on an incredible display in net for the Kraken Beers.  Slayton turned aside 28 of the 30 shots on goal that he faced (.933 SV%).  At the other end of the ice, Dangleberry netminder Josh Noullet also faced 30 shots with 24 saves (.800 SV%).

After the game, we caught up with the Dangleberries' keeper Josh Noullet to ask where the 'berries could improve.  "Well, we came out at the drop of the puck a bit rusty from the long off season and I got beat on a couple of two-on-ones early. I've got to do better there. And Barney stood on his head for them at the other end. We'll get there.  I also was giving that hack Hubbard too much credit that he'd have good hockey sense and pass the puck and I overplayed the pass on his first goal. I'd like to have that one back. I should've known: once a selfish player, always a selfish player."

We weren't able to catch up with Kraken defenseman John Hubbard for comment.

The next contest is Thursday night (10/14 at 9pm) as the Dangleberries look for a win as they travel to visit the C-Men in their home (and season) opener.  The first 1,000 fans will receive a free signature from C-Men captain Don "The Silver Stallion" Terkalas (please bring pen and paper).  We'll see you there CHAAAL fans!
